...von Blüth und Duft (2005)
saxophone quartet - 7'40"
...von Blüth und Duft is an excerpt from Walther's Preislied from Wagner's Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg. Some of Wagner's melodic and harmonic material was used as a basis for the Recitativo sections of this piece.
This piece is a mixture of three styles of music:
+German Romantic Opera (specifically Walther's song that communicates to me a naive, almost adolescent, desire for Eva.
-Argentine Tango (rooted in the desperation and darkness of bordello life outside of Buenos Aires)
+A freely chromatic, contrapuntal type of music that relates in my mind to the hyper-aggressive American brand of heavy metal (middle Megadeth, early Slayer)
...von Blüth und Duft was written for Sheri Brown, Jeff Welsh, Nicole Konjevoda and Christina Lanergan and was premiered in April of 2005.
