Sonatine
A collaboration with Rick Rowley, piano and Perfecto Creative
Generously supported by the Butler School of Music faculty development program.
Sonatine is a short three-movement piece based on Erik Satie's Sonatine bureaucratique which is based on Muzio Clementi's Sonatina Op. 36 no. 1. Satie creatively transformed Clementi's music while maintaining a clear and recognizable form, diverse textures throughout, and a sense of conversation in the music. I sought to do the same using my own compositional voice. I diverged from the Satie where he diverged from the Clementi - for example, the outer sections of the second movement (Satie's melody is stepwise where Clementi's leaps around, and mine is quite a bit more languorous and in 5/8 meter) - but for those who know either earlier work (and for those who don't), Sonatine will hopefully feel equal parts familiar, surprising, and refreshing.
