Rondo a Calvino (2011)
flute, clarinet, bassoon, percussion, violin, viola, cello - 10'
Rondo a Calvino is inspired by the structure of Italo Calivno’s book If on a winter’s night a traveler… Calvino embeds a number of colorful small stories inside of a frame story that spans the entire book. As such, this piece begins with slow music that returns throughout the whole work, interspersed with faster “colorful” passages. The most interesting aspect of the book (and one that I realized during the process of writing this piece) is that the content between the stories (both "colorful" and frame) is interconnected, even though on the surface they are very different.
