Winter (2008) ca. 3 min. soprano or tenor voice, viola text: "Winter" by Robert Louis Stevenson Premiered 28 May, 2008 by Adriana Balzan, soprano and Russell Podgorsek, viola at the Simsbury Chamber Music Festival Despite the fact that I studied voiced for a while and have done a good deal of singing in my life, I find that I have to make an effort to write simple, flowing lines for the voice (probably because I spend so much time writing instrumental music that I myself end up playing). This piece is one of my more successful ones in that sense; the vocal lines flow nicely and the viola has an active (but not distracting accompaniment...and a couple of solo sections!). |
