harp, wind ensemble

Premiered December 2006 by Annabelle Taubl, harp and the Hartt Wind Ensemble under Glen Adsit in West Hartford, CT.

Glen Adsit asked me to write a piece for Annabelle and Wind Ensemble with the specific request that the piece "stretch her". I once described this commission as "giving someone a real hard time through music". All kidding aside, Annabelle is a fine harpist and pushing her aesthetic boundaries was something I took very seriously. Like many of my pieces, this one incorporates many different styles of music and explores how they interact with one another. Much like the first Sinfonia Concertante I wrote, this piece is overflowing with extra-musical references despite its generic title. The first movement is literally a song I wrote for my mother's birthday right around the time Glen asked me for the piece. I wrote it on guitar and the translation to harp was nearly effortless. And in fact much of the rest of the piece are variations of this orignal music in many different guises. The second movement requires the harpist and members of the ensemble to recite the famous poem "Der Doppelganger" over a mixture of "German" musics (including a Rammstein moment). The third movement Serenade is a mixture of new music and variations of the original song (from the first movement) that ends with a "fugue" that uses variations instead of just lines of music. The fourth movement is highlighted by "drunk clown music" during which the harpist must wildly recite the text from "Vesti la giubba" from Paglicaci amidst ridicule from the ensemble. The finale is a variation and a half of the original tune in a Stravinsky-esque style.
