Texts by William Strosnider and Russell Podgorsek

Premiered April 2005 in West Hartford, CT.

Sinfonia Concertante is a place where a number of my "disparate" musical interests come together:

-German Romantic opera (more specifically Wagner, even more specifically Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg)
-Argentine tango music (Astor Piazzolla and the preceeding generation)
-American heavy metal (early Megadeth, middle Slayer, etc.)

These three styles (as well as the Italian roots of our Western musical culture) interact in a number of ways throughout the piece. A great deal of the harmonic material is derived from a quotation from Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg... The line uttered by Hans Sachs "wie Vögelsang im Süssen Mai" is altered much like the musical material is altered.
