MicroSymphony (2007) 11 min. orchestra (2.2.2.2 2 1.1.0.0 str) Premiered 10 May, 2008 by the Salisbury Symphony Orchestra in Salisbury, MD. MicroSymphony was commissioned by Jeff Schoyen and the Salisbury Symphony Orchestra. The piece is a kind of condensed Classical period symphony; there are elements of each standard type of movement throughout (sonata form, slow movement music, theme and variations, rondo and even a minuet that is so compressed it becomes a fugue). Obviously the style of the music is much different and much more eclectic than would be found anywhere in the Classical period but that was my mental framework for the piece. However, as was the case in the Classical period, clarity is key. |
