MicroSonata (2008) ca. 2 min. baroque flute, baroque violin, harpsichord alt. vers. for soprano sax, viola, cello Premiered 6 May, 2008 by Les Inegales at the Simsbury Chamber Music Festival I had a very hard time trying to come up with a convincing piece for the trio that wasn't simply a copy of an authentic trio sonata but still lived in that Baroque style. My solution came in the form of altering the musical syntax of the Baroque style while keeping the gestures and genres steady. In other words, I took an existing tune of mine ("Mr. Shwizzle" from Sinfonia Concertante) and ran in through a sort of table of contents of Baroquo styles. The result is a slightly schizophrenic but thoroughly Baroque-sounding piece whose style changes illuminate the form of the tune. |
