Three Character Pieces with Metal Interludes (2006) M.B. ca. 5 min. bass trombone The "character" in each character piece refers to the way in which the pitch tendencies of equal-tempered tonal music are influenced by isolated un-tempered pitches. In the first piece the darkening tendencies are further darkened by "flat" un-tempered pitches. In the second, the brightening tendencies are enhanced. Tragically, in the third piece the un-tempered pitches counteract the tonal direction of the music creating a sterile, dead sound world. The "metal" interludes are named for the genre of music they reflect as well as the composition of the instrument on which they are played. Both the angular "metal" interludes and the distortion of tuning grow throughout the piece creating a sort of musical/rhetorical trajectory. Three Character Pieces was written for Tim Fisher. |
