Texts by Byron

These pieces were written during the summer and fall of 2004 and were directly inspired by the literature for tenor-voice by Benjamin Britten. Although little is the similar between our respective musics, a preoccupation with a lyrical line is a definite parallel.

I was attracted to Byron's poems because each has a distinct personality. Each poem also deals with very different subject matter. Conversely, the music is incredibly unified utilizing the same and similar material throughout all four songs. My original intention was for these pieces to be mostly voice with the cello coloring and highlighting certain passages. Throughout the composition of the piece, however, the cello's role grew to one of equal standing with the voice.

These pieces were written for and dedicated to my former voice teacher and lyric tenor John Wesley Wright.
